Besiktas have sacked head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjær with immediate effect following a string of poor results that culminated in a humiliating defeat at home to Swiss side Lausanne in the Conference League play-offs on Thursday.
The Norwegian’s dismissal was first reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano before being confirmed by the Turkish club in a statement:
“Our contract with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated following a decision made at a board meeting. Following the meeting, our chairman, Serdal Adalı, thanked Solskjaer for his services to date.”
Solskjær, 52, took charge of the Istanbul giants in January 2025 and guided them to a fourth-place Süper Lig finish last season.
But a disappointing start to the new campaign, coupled with elimination from Europe, left the board with little choice but to act.
The Thursday defeat at home to Lausanne not only ended Besiktas’ hopes of playing European football this season but also intensified fan frustration after the club were previously knocked out of Europa League qualifiers by Shakhtar Donetsk.
Search for a Successor
Besiktas have already begun the hunt for a new head coach, with Nuri Sahin, the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder and ex-Antalyaspor manager, emerging as an early frontrunner.
The club are expected to move quickly in order to stabilise their season and re-establish themselves in the title race.
For Solskjær, it marks another abrupt end to a managerial spell following his dismissal at Manchester United in 2021, leaving his long-term future in management uncertain.
