Arsenal have agreed a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Piero Hincapié on a season-long loan with an option to buy.

If the option is triggered, the 23-year-old Ecuadorian defender will sign a five-year contract worth a total package of £45m.

Hincapié has been granted permission to travel for a medical this weekend according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The deal is expected to accelerate Porto’s move for Jakub Kiwior, with the Poland international set for a loan with an obligation to buy worth £24m.

Why Hincapié?

South American football expert Tim Vickery told Sky Sports News’ Transfer Talk that while Hincapié is a strong addition, Arsenal’s interest is somewhat surprising:

“He’s a left-footed defender, a centre-back who can also play left-back, but he’s not the kind of full-back who flies up the wing. He likes to bring the ball out of defence.

“It’s been great to be proved wrong about him after I thought he looked too spindly as a teenager — he’s grown into a terrific defender. My little doubt here is, why Arsenal? With Gabriel Magalhães and [Riccardo] Calafiori already there, they’ve got cover.

“On the evidence of this season, you’d have thought Liverpool could really do with him.”

Saka Injury Blow Ahead of Liverpool

Arsenal’s preparations for Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash with Liverpool have been hit by an injury to Bukayo Saka.

The 23-year-old was forced off in the 5-0 win over Leeds with a hamstring issue, having already missed three months last season with a problem in his right hamstring.

This time it is his left hamstring, and while surgery is not required, Saka has been ruled out of the Anfield trip and withdrawn from the England squad.

Manager Mikel Arteta admitted the injury is a major concern:

“It’s a big worry for us. He’s hugely important, and we need to be careful with how we manage him.”

Captain Martin Ødegaard is also a doubt for the match, which will be shown live on Sky Sports Premier League.
