Ruben Amorim has conceded that his emotions sometimes get the better of him, admitting: “Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years” as he reflected on his post-match comments following Manchester United’s Carabao Cup exit at Grimsby.

Amorim sparked speculation over his future on Wednesday when he claimed his players had “spoken really loud” and that “something has to change” after United crashed out on penalties to the fourth-tier side.

Ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Burnley, the Portuguese coach clarified that his words were a product of frustration.

“Sometimes I love to be with my players. Sometimes I don’t want to be with my players. I need to improve on that. It is going to be hard,” he said.

“Sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players – this is my way of doing things. In that moment, I was so frustrated.”

Amorim stressed he will continue to be honest in his media appearances, despite criticism of his candour.

“People tell me to be more calm, but I am not going to be like that. I have the passion I have. That kind of performance disappointed me. But now it is a new game.”

Talks with the club?

Reports on Friday claimed Amorim would hold discussions with United’s hierarchy during the September international break amid fears he could walk away. Asked about the speculation, he replied:

“I always have conversations with them. I am just focused on this game [against Burnley]. I need to live this day by day. I am going to be like that all the time, so prepare yourselves.”

Mainoo and Højlund futures

Amorim also addressed the situation surrounding midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has informed United he wants to leave on loan this season.

“I want Kobbie to stay and he needs to fight for his place. We need Kobbie. That is not going to change,” said the United boss.

Meanwhile, striker Rasmus Højlund is close to sealing an initial loan move to Napoli, Amorim would not be drawn on the deal, saying only:

“Until it is official, I cannot say much.”

United, who finished 15th in the Premier League last season, are searching for their first win of the new campaign when they face Burnley at Old Trafford.
