Peter Obi vs Deji Adeyanju: Former Anambra governor threatens lawsuit over alleged defamatory posts on social media, demanding a public apology and retraction.

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has issued a legal threat against well-known Nigerian human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, over alleged defamatory statements circulating on social media.

According to Obi’s legal representatives from EJESIMEN & CO MADIBA CHAMBERS, SAN, Adeyanju has, on multiple occasions, published remarks that they claim have damaged the former governor’s reputation.

These remarks, made via X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms, were described as derogatory and misleading.

The dispute centers on a specific post dated August 21, in which Adeyanju allegedly accused Obi of misappropriating funds from the Anambra State treasury to invest in his family business.

In the post, Adeyanju claimed that during a personal meeting with Obi, the former governor attempted to “give me money and called it thank you for coming, it’s 100% true.” Obi’s legal team has labeled these statements as false and damaging.

In response, Obi’s lawyers demanded a public retraction of the statements, along with an unreserved apology, warning that failure to comply would result in full legal proceedings.

The notice emphasizes that such allegations are defamatory and have the potential to harm Obi’s public image and political standing.

However, Adeyanju has publicly dismissed the threat. In an X post on Wednesday night, he stated that he is ready to meet Obi in court.

In his post, he described the letter as laughable and accused Obi of hypocrisy and orchestrating online attacks through his aides.

Adeyanju wrote: “Just got this letter from Peter Obi, the religious bigot, demanding a retraction from me.

“I laughed so hard. I can’t wait to meet him in court finally. A fraud parading himself as a messiah.

“This same guy called the great Sowore a blackmailer-in-chief.

“We served his little errand girl Serah a letter to retract all her defamatory publications on Monday against my wife, and she ran to the leader of the mob for help. Can’t wait to meet him in court.

“Serah Ibrahim will soon have her day in court. Obi cannot save her, and I am ready for him in court 100%. Super happy he sent that letter.

“It proves what we have always suspected: he is the one sending them to defame people online because they are his aides.”

Deji Adeyanju has long been a vocal critic of Peter Obi and has often questioned the former governor’s political ambitions, insisting that Obi may never become President of Nigeria.

Adeyanju has also clashed repeatedly online with Obidients, the nickname for Obi’s loyal supporters, over posts and statements they considered unfavorable.

As the legal standoff unfolds, the confrontation between Peter Obi and Deji Adeyanju reflects more than just political rivalry.

Beyond politics, this dispute reflects how social media has become a powerful platform for influence—and a potential arena for reputational harm.

With both parties willing to take their fight to court, the outcome could redefine the boundaries of online criticism and set the tone for political discourse in the digital era.
