The 23-year-old German forward is due to arrive on Tyneside tonight ahead of a medical on Friday, after Newcastle agreed a package worth £64.86m (€75m) plus £4.3m (€5m) in add-ons.
The deal, totalling just over £69m, surpasses the £63m Newcastle paid for Isak three years ago.
Isak Edging Towards Exit
Newcastle had long insisted Isak would only be sold if an adequate replacement was secured, with Woltemade now incoming, the path is clear for Liverpool to return with a fresh offer.
Newcastle are still planning to bring in a second striker before formally entertaining Liverpool’s advances.
Who Next for Newcastle?
The Magpies remain keen on Yoane Wissa, who has not featured for Brentford this season amid transfer interest.
However, a deal for Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen looks unlikely after two rejected bids, with the Norwegian considered too stylistically similar to Woltemade.
Woltemade, meanwhile, had also been pursued by Bayern Munich, who failed with multiple offers earlier this summer.
The striker was determined to work with Eddie Howe and play in the Premier League, with Newcastle scouts — led by Andy Howe, effectively acting as sporting director — tracking him for some time.
‘Unconventional’ Woltemade
Standing at 6ft 6in, Woltemade defies the traditional target-man mould, he frequently drifts wide, drops deep, and is known for his ability to dribble past defenders as well as score goals.
Former Stuttgart striker Cacau told Sky Sports:
“He is an amazing player. He can score goals but also give assists. He is tall but also technical — very, very good. He is the perfect No 9.”
Newcastle view Woltemade as a physical forward who can both lead the line and link up with their wide players — a key factor in their pursuit of him.
With Woltemade’s arrival imminent, the spotlight now shifts to Anfield, where Liverpool must decide whether to break the British transfer record to finally prise Isak away from St James’ Park.
