Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced a one-month leave beginning August 29, 2025, sparking speculation that he may be strategizing for a potential presidential bid in the 2027 elections. The governor’s leave, communicated to the House of Assembly in a letter, includes a formal transfer of power to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, who will serve as acting Governor during this period.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, is set to embark on a one-month leave starting Friday, August 29, 2025. The announcement was made in a letter addressed to the House of Assembly, which was presented during a plenary session on Tuesday by Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin.

The letter, in accordance with Section 190(1) of the 1999 Constitution, detailed the governor’s request for vacation and the formal transfer of power to his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal. Lawal will serve as acting Governor during Makinde’s absence.
“I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as acting Governor. I shall resume duty upon my return from vacation on Monday, 29th September, 2025,” the letter stated.

Political analysts suggest that Makinde’s decision to take time off could be a tactical move as he positions himself within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the forthcoming presidential primaries. As a prominent figure in the party, his leadership in Oyo State has garnered attention and support, which could bolster his chances of securing the PDP ticket.
The governor’s letter, read at a plenary session by Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, aligns with constitutional provisions and reassures the public of a smooth transition of governance. “I hereby transmit that during the period indicated above, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, shall serve as acting Governor,” Makinde stated, emphasizing his intent to return to duty on September 29, 2025.

While some view the leave as a necessary break, others interpret it as an opportunity for Makinde to engage with party stakeholders and refine his campaign strategies. The PDP is currently evaluating its candidates for the 2027 elections, and Makinde’s active involvement in the process could be crucial in shaping the party’s direction.
