Jorgen Strand Larsen came off the bench to fire Wolves into the third round of the EFL Carabao Cup with a 3-2 win over West Ham on Tuesday, while Premier League rivals Leeds and Sunderland suffered shock penalty exits to lower-league opposition.

Reports claim Wolves have already rejected a £50 million ($67m) bid from Newcastle for Larsen, who is being lined up as a potential successor to Alexander Isak.

The Norwegian striker showed exactly why he is in demand, producing two clinical finishes in three minutes to turn the tie at Molineux.

Wolves boss Vitor Pereira had made eight changes after back-to-back Premier League defeats to Manchester City and Bournemouth , and his side trailed 2-1 when Larsen was introduced with 17 minutes left.

But his late double overturned goals from Tomas Soucek and Lucas Paqueta, after Rodrigo Gomes had given the hosts an early lead.

The defeat heaps more pressure on West Ham manager Graham Potter, whose side have now lost all three games this season, conceding 11 goals in the process.

Leeds and Sunderland stunned

Elsewhere, Leeds United’s £100 million summer rebuild counted for little as they crashed out at Sheffield Wednesday.

In front of a subdued home crowd — many staying away in protest at owner Dejphon Chansiri — Wednesday held Leeds to a 1-1 draw before triumphing on penalties, with Leeds missing all three of their spot-kicks.

Sunderland also bowed out in embarrassing fashion, losing a shootout to League One Huddersfield after a 1-1 draw.

Other results

Brentford advanced with a 2-0 win in the night’s only all-Premier League clash, defeating Bournemouth courtesy of goals from Fabio Carvalho and Igor Thiago.

At Turf Moor, Burnley needed a stoppage-time strike from Oliver Sonne to edge Championship side Derby County 2-1.
