Abuja-Kaduna train derails at KM 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations, leaving six passengers injured. NSIB deploys team to investigate the incident

Six passengers sustained injuries on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, when a Kaduna-bound train derailed at approximately 11:09 a.m. at KM 49, located between Kubwa Station and Asham Station.

Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

Passengers on the Abuja–Kaduna train service faced an unexpected ordeal when the train derailed midway into its journey, leaving many stranded along the corridor.

The derailment occurred shortly after the train departed from Abuja.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and terrifying, with many scrambling to exit the affected carriages in fear of further incidents.



The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the incident in a statement signed by Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance.

According to the Bureau, six passengers sustained injuries, but all are currently receiving attention.

A specialized “go-team” of investigators has been deployed to the scene to collect evidence, engage with relevant stakeholders, and commence a comprehensive investigation into the factors that led to the derailment.

The NSIB emphasized that the investigation aims to determine both the direct and underlying causes of the accident.

The Bureau expressed sympathy for the injured passengers and extended support to all those affected, reiterating its commitment to safety and the prevention of future accidents.

In the statement, the Bureau said, “current information available indicates that six persons sustained injuries, and there were no recorded fatalities.

“Our go-team has been deployed to gather evidence, liaise with relevant stakeholders, and commence a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the derailment.

“We extend our heartfelt support to those affected and are committed to issuing safety recommendations to prevent a recurrence.”

Captain Alex Badeh, Director-General of NSIB, also commented on the incident, “we deeply sympathize with all passengers who sustained injuries.

“Our investigators are on-site to ensure the root cause of this derailment is uncovered.

“We remain committed to promoting safer rail transport for Nigerians through transparent, independent investigations.”

Eyewitnesses recounted the sudden derailment, with one passenger noting that the train veered off the tracks without warning, sparking confusion and panic as passengers hurried to leave the affected carriages.

Others described the sound of metal screeching and the train shaking violently, intensifying the chaos.

Authorities have assured the public that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

The NSIB’s intervention underscores the importance of safety compliance in Nigeria’s rail sector and highlights the Bureau’s commitment to preventing similar incidents in the future.
