Lucas Vazquez is finally set to embark on a new chapter in his career, with the Spanish veteran closing in on a move to Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen following his departure from Real Madrid.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano and AS, Vazquez has already undergone medicals privately and will fly to Germany on Tuesday to finalise the transfer.

He will arrive at the BayArena as a free agent and is set to sign a two-year contract with Xabi Alonso’s side, who will compete on multiple fronts this season, including the defence of their league crown.

The 34-year-old bid farewell to Real Madrid earlier this summer, ending an 18-year association with the club he joined as a teenager in 2007.

A product of the youth system, Vazquez spent a season on loan at Espanyol in 2014/15 before breaking into the first team under Rafa Benítez and establishing himself as a trusted figure during Zinedine Zidane’s tenure.

Though rarely among the headline stars, Vazquez carved out a reputation as one of Madrid’s most dependable players, capable of filling in as both a winger and a right-back.

His tireless work ethic and versatility saw him feature prominently in some of the club’s biggest moments, particularly during their historic Champions League three-peat from 2016 to 2018.

Over the course of a decade with the senior side, Vazquez amassed 402 appearances, scoring 33 goals and assisting 59 more.

His honours list is extensive: five Champions League titles, four La Liga crowns, four FIFA Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, and three Spanish Super Cups — 23 trophies in total.

Speculation over his next move had linked him with a return to Espanyol, where he enjoyed his only spell away from Madrid, as well as interest from Juventus, Fenerbahce, and clubs in Saudi Arabia.

However, Vazquez has opted for a fresh challenge in Germany, joining a Leverkusen side revitalised under former Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag.

Leverkusen see the veteran as an experienced figure who can add depth and leadership to their backline while also contributing in advanced positions.

If everything goes well, his debut could come as soon as August 30, when Die Werkself host Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga.

For Real Madrid, Vazquez leaves as more than just a squad player; he departs as a loyal servant whose longevity and professionalism ensured his place in the club’s modern history.

For Bayer Leverkusen, he arrives as a seasoned winner ready to share his experience in the Champions League and beyond.
