Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed the signing of Spanish veteran Lucas Vazquez on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Real Madrid earlier this summer.

The 34-year-old full-back, who spent 18 years at the Bernabéu, has agreed a two-year deal with Erik ten Hag’s side as they look to rebuild after a summer of major departures.

Vazquez leaves Madrid as one of the club’s most decorated modern servants, winning five Champions League titles, four La Liga crowns and three FIFA Club World Cups during a career that spanned more than 400 appearances for Los Blancos.

In a statement released by Leverkusen, the nine-time Spain international revealed that conversations with former Real teammate Dani Carvajal, who had a loan spell at Leverkusen in 2012-13, as well as new Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, played a role in his decision.

“My discussions with the management confirmed what I’d been told – this club is focused on winning, is hungry, and aiming for the biggest targets,” Vazquez said. “That mindset coincides with my own ideas and I’m looking forward to striving for more success here.”

Vazquez, who began his career as a winger before converting into a reliable right-back, was used in both roles during his time in Madrid.

Last season he featured in 32 La Liga games but found minutes harder to come by in 2025, making just two substitute appearances at the FIFA Club World Cup after the arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool.

Leverkusen, German champions in 2024, were keen to strengthen at full-back following Jeremie Frimpong’s big-money move to the Premier League champions.

They have also endured a testing summer in the market, with midfield star Florian Wirtz joining Liverpool, captain Granit Xhaka departing for Sunderland, and defender Jonathan Tah moving to Bayern Munich.

Vazquez will now provide much-needed experience and versatility as Ten Hag seeks to guide Leverkusen back into contention both domestically and in Europe.
