The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has unveiled a significant upgrade to passenger support services, introducing enhanced wheelchair assistance and special mobility services for passengers with disabilities, the elderly, and those requiring additional help at airports nationwide.
The initiative, announced on Monday via FAAN’s official social media account on X (formerly Twitter), aims to ensure that air travel across Nigeria is safer, more comfortable, and dignified for all categories of travelers.

FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, explained that the new services are designed to accompany passengers from the point of check-in through boarding and upon arrival at their destination.
“Wheelchair services are provided from check-in through boarding and on arrival. Dedicated staff are available to offer guidance and support.
Priority is given at security checks and boarding gates,” Orah said, emphasizing that the upgrade is part of FAAN’s broader commitment to enhancing accessibility in the country’s aviation sector.
Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), highlighted that terminals across major airports now feature improved accessible facilities, including restrooms, elevators, and designated boarding points to streamline mobility for passengers in need.
The authority has also stressed the importance of advance notice, advising passengers requiring assistance to notify their airlines or airport staff ahead of travel or to make their requests at the special assistance desk upon arrival.
This move aligns with international best practices, ensuring Nigeria’s airports meet global accessibility standards and accommodate travelers with diverse needs.
“Our goal is to make air travel seamless for everyone, including the elderly, persons with disabilities, and travelers with reduced mobility,” Orah added.
The implementation of these services involves coordinated efforts between FAAN, airport management teams, airlines, and security agencies.

By prioritizing passengers needing mobility support during check-in, security screening, and boarding, FAAN aims to reduce stress and potential delays for both travelers and airport operations.
Industry experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that accessible airports not only enhance passenger safety but also improve overall travel experience, encourage more domestic and international travel, and project Nigeria as a nation committed to inclusive infrastructure.
“Providing dedicated support for passengers with disabilities is no longer optional; it’s essential for a modern aviation industry.
FAAN’s move demonstrates leadership in passenger welfare and compliance with global accessibility standards,” said Chidi Okafor, an aviation consultant based in Lagos.
The announcement comes at a time when Nigeria is actively improving its aviation infrastructure to boost tourism, business travel, and global connectivity.
Enhanced passenger services, such as the wheelchair and mobility support program, are expected to encourage more inclusive participation in air travel for those previously deterred by physical limitations or inadequate airport facilities.
FAAN’s program also reinforces the government’s commitment to promoting equality and accessibility in public spaces.
By prioritizing vulnerable passengers, the authority is helping to ensure that airports in Nigeria are not only efficient but also socially responsible and user-friendly.
Passengers have expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that it addresses long-standing challenges faced by travelers with reduced mobility.

Many have highlighted the convenience of having trained personnel assist them through check-in, security, and boarding procedures, making air travel safer and less stressful.
Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), plans to monitor the rollout of the wheelchair and mobility assistance program closely, collecting feedback from passengers and stakeholders to continually improve service quality.
The authority also intends to expand the program to all regional airports, ensuring nationwide accessibility for air travelers.
As Nigeria continues to invest in its aviation sector, initiatives like this set a benchmark for inclusive and customer-focused services, positioning the country as a leader in Africa for accessible air travel.
