Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle insists Nigeria can still spring surprises in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers despite their stuttering start to the campaign.
The Eagles sit fourth in Group C with seven points from six matches, six points adrift of leaders South Africa on 13 while Rwanda and Benin Republic are a point ahead of Nigeria, while Lesotho are bottom.

Chelle, who replaced Finidi George earlier this year, has overseen just two games so far — a 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali and a frustrating 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Uyo.
His predecessors, José Peseiro and Finidi, failed to record any wins in their combined four matches in charge of the qualifiers.
Despite the uphill task, the Franco-Malian tactician is refusing to concede defeat.
“People have already written us off. But I am not bothered by that,” Chelle told UK-based Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana during the 2024 CHAN tournament in Tanzania. “I am concentrating on preparing my players for the remaining four matches that we have, I think that we are going to surprise a lot of people.”
Nigeria will regroup in Uyo on September 1 ahead of two crucial fixtures, they host Rwanda on September 6 before travelling to Bloemfontein to face South Africa three days later.
Their final two qualifiers come in October against Lesotho (away) and Benin Republic (home).

Chelle’s task could yet be made slightly easier, with reports suggesting group leaders South Africa may be docked points for fielding an ineligible player during their 2-0 victory over Lesotho in March — a case currently under review.
With only four games left to rescue their qualifying campaign, the Super Eagles who missed out on the last World Cup in Qatar in 2022 must find both form and consistency if they are to reach the FIFA 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
