Kylian Mbappe continued his bright start at Real Madrid with two goals in a 3-0 victory over Real Oviedo on Sunday, as the newly promoted hosts marked their long-awaited La Liga return against the 15-time European champions.

For Oviedo, back in Spain’s top flight after almost 25 years, it was a gala occasion and their fans created a carnival atmosphere in Asturias.

But Madrid’s star quality proved decisive, with Mbappe’s double and a late strike from Vinicius Junior securing a second straight win for Xabi Alonso’s side.

Alonso made changes from the opening-day win over Osasuna, resting Vinicius and Trent Alexander-Arnold in favour of Rodrygo and captain Dani Carvajal.

Teenage Argentine Franco Mastantuono was handed his first start, showing glimpses of his dribbling ability, Arda Güler also impressed, testing Aaron Escandell with a fierce effort before setting up Mbappe’s opener in the 37th minute.

Oviedo fought bravely, with Kwasi Sibo hitting the post in the closing stages, but Madrid struck twice late on to kill the game. Vinicius, introduced from the bench, assisted Mbappe for his second before adding a goal himself in stoppage time, sealing the points.
