Kobbie Mainoo’s Manchester United future looks increasingly uncertain after manager Ruben Amorim admitted the young midfielder is currently competing with captain Bruno Fernandes for a place in the side.

The 20-year-old England international has yet to feature this season, having been left out of the squad for United’s opening-day defeat to Arsenal and Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Fulham.

At Craven Cottage, Amorim overlooked Mainoo even as United chased a late winner, after Rodrigo Muniz’s own goal had put United ahead, Fulham’s Emile Smith Rowe equalised, and Amorim opted for tactical reshuffles instead of turning to the academy product.

The Portuguese coach replaced Casemiro with new striker Benjamin Sesko, moving Mason Mount—who started up front—back into midfield.

Mount was later withdrawn for Manuel Ugarte, while defenders Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven were introduced in search of a decisive goal.

Fernandes squandered a first-half penalty but remains an automatic starter, with Mainoo’s immediate prospects limited to a potential League Cup outing against Grimsby on Wednesday.

“He is fighting for the position now with Bruno,” Amorim said after the match.

“I changed two midfielders. I like Mason Mount there because we wanted to score. Then I felt the team needed to return to one holding midfielder.

So he just needs to fight for the position with Bruno in training. Like it should be at Manchester United.”

Mainoo, once tipped as a central figure in United’s rebuild, now faces a battle to convince Amorim that he can displace the skipper in midfield.
