North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen the test-firing of two new air defense missiles, state media reported, demonstrating the country’s continued efforts to bolster its military capabilities.

The tests, which took place on Saturday, showed that the missiles had “superior combat capability” and a “fast response” to aerial targets such as attack drones and cruise missiles.

The report comes a day before US President Donald Trump meets with South Korean counterpart Lee Jae-myung in Washington, DC.

The timing of the missile tests is seen as a demonstration of North Korea’s military strength and its ability to respond to threats from the US and its allies.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the missiles’ “operation and reaction mode is based on unique and special technology”.

The launches also come as South Korea and the US continue their annual joint military drills, which North Korea has condemned as a threat to its security.

Earlier this month, Kim Jong Un criticized the drills, pledging to speed up North Korea’s nuclear build-up in response to what he sees as hostile intentions from the US and South Korea.

South Korea’s new leader, Lee Jae-myung, has sought warmer ties with North Korea, promising to build “military trust” between the two nations.

However, Pyongyang has shown little interest in improving relations with Seoul, particularly in light of the ongoing US-South Korea joint military drills.

The tensions between North and South Korea are further complicated by recent incidents, including the brief crossing of the border by North Korean soldiers, which prompted warning shots from South Korean troops.

The upcoming summit between Trump and Lee Jae-myung will likely focus on addressing the security concerns posed by North Korea’s military activities.

The international community remains watchful of North Korea’s actions, given its history of provocative missile tests and nuclear ambitions.

As the situation on the Korean Peninsula continues to unfold, diplomatic efforts will be crucial in maintaining regional stability and preventing further escalation.
