Manchester City defender Ruben Dias has signed a two-year contract extension that keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until 2029, with an option for a further 12 months.

According to Fabrizio Romano reports on Friday, the Portugal international’s previous deal was set to expire in 2027, but the new agreement secures his long-term future with the Premier League champions.

Dias, 28, joined City from Benfica in 2020 for £65m and quickly established himself as a defensive mainstay, winning the Premier League Player of the Year award in his debut season.

Over the past five years, he has played a crucial role in City’s success, helping the club to four Premier League titles, a Champions League crown, the FA Cup, and the EFL Cup.

Reacting to his new deal, Dias said:

“I am incredibly happy today. I love Manchester – it is my home now – and I love the Manchester City fans.

When I think about the trophies we have won and how we have played our football during my time here, I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.”

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, hailed Dias as “a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch.”

With Dias’ future secured, the club is expected to turn its attention to the contracts of John Stones and Bernardo Silva, who both have one year remaining.

Ilkay Gundogan and goalkeeper Ederson are also in the final 12 months of their deals, while Rodri, Phil Foden, Manuel Akanji, and Nathan Ake each have two years left.

Young defender Rico Lewis is meanwhile close to signing a new five-year contract.
