The Benue State House of Assembly has placed a three-month suspension on its Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Alfred Berger, together with three other members, following allegations that they attempted to create instability in the House.

The other suspended lawmakers are Hon. Shimawua Emmanuel of Vandeikya 2, Hon. Cyril Ikong of Oju 2, and Hon. Abu Umoru representing Apa Constituency.

The decision came after the Majority Leader, Hon. Saater Tiseer, introduced a motion during plenary.

The motion, titled “Motion to Suspend Hon. Alfred Aondoaver Emberga and Three Others from Legislative Duties for Attempting to Cause Chaos in the House”, accused the lawmakers of plotting to mobilise colleagues against the Speaker with the aim of initiating his removal.

This was said to have happened only days after the Assembly had publicly expressed confidence in both its leadership and the state governor.

Several lawmakers voiced strong disapproval of the alleged move.

Among them were Hon. Elias Audu of Gwer East and the Majority Chief Whip, Hon. Peter Bendigo Ipusu from Katsina-Ala West, who both described the action as a direct threat to order and stability in the chamber.

After debate, the Speaker adopted the motion and pronounced a three-month suspension on the four members.

Hon. Berger, who also heads the House Committee on Information, will remain out of legislative duties during this period.

The Speaker’s media adviser, Terver Mzamber, later explained that the measure was taken to preserve discipline and protect the institution from internal crises.

Beyond the suspension matter, the Assembly also turned its attention to executive business.

Out of nine commissioner nominees submitted for confirmation, four were successfully screened and cleared.

Those confirmed were Dr. Ortese Yanmar, Dr. Fredrick Ikyaan, Orpin Manasseh Alumo, and Michael Oglegbe. The screening of the remaining nominees is expected to continue at subsequent sessions.
