Chelsea dismantled West Ham 5-1 at the London Stadium on Friday night, piling further pressure on Hammers boss Graham Potter after a dismal defensive showing.

The result came just a week after West Ham’s 3-0 defeat to Sunderland, leaving Potter’s side with eight goals conceded in their opening two league matches — the worst defensive start to a top-flight season in the club’s history.

Former England midfielder Jamie Redknapp labelled their defending “scandalous” after Chelsea stormed into a 5-1 lead by the 58th minute, despite being without Cole Palmer, who withdrew in the warm-up with an injury.

West Ham had actually struck first through Lucas Paquetá, who unleashed a thunderous long-range effort, but Chelsea quickly turned the game on its head, with João Pedro equalising before Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernández struck before halftime.

The second half saw West Ham unravel completely; new goalkeeper Mads Hermansen endured a nightmare home debut, spilling a cross that Moisés Caicedo who made his 100 appearances for Chelsea converted before Trevoh Chalobah headed in from another set piece moments later.

The world club champions, who opened the season with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace, produced a ruthless display that had their fans taunting Potter with chants of “there’s only one Graham Potter” — a reference to his ill-fated spell at Chelsea.

Since taking charge of West Ham in January, Potter has overseen just five wins in 20 Premier League matches.

Boos rang out around the London Stadium as fans directed their anger at both the manager and the board.

Redknapp did not hold back in his assessment, warning the Hammers face a relegation battle unless urgent reinforcements arrive.

“That squad is going to be in a relegation fight unless they give the manager some help,” he said on Sky Sports. “They need four, five, six new signings. I’ve seen some bad defending in my life, but that was as poor as it gets.”

The pundit also questioned the decision to start Hermansen over Alphonse Areola.

“Confidence is low. The goalkeeper doesn’t make it any easier. He’s already made high-profile mistakes, and he doesn’t fill me with any confidence. A change might have to be made.”

West Ham now face a crucial period in the transfer market, with calls growing louder for the board to back Potter before the window closes.
