Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa in a deal worth £40m.

The 24-year-old, who has agreed a five-year contract, becomes the Magpies’ fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsdale.

“This is a big move for me, but as soon as I knew the gaffer was interested and really liked me, it didn’t take much time to decide,” Ramsey told the club’s website. “It was always a tough game playing against Newcastle – the team is full of energy, so athletic and the fans are so passionate. I feel my game will suit that, and I’m excited to be on the other end of it now.”

Ramsey, a former England Under-21 international, had been with Villa since the age of six and made 167 appearances for the senior side.

He impressed in last season’s Champions League campaign, further enhancing his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most dynamic midfielders.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe welcomed the signing, praising Ramsey’s adaptability and hunger. “Jacob offers versatility and his directness in attack has proven to be a real threat at this level in recent seasons. He fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League experience. We believe he’ll be a major asset for us.”

Ramsey will retain the number 41 shirt he wore at Villa Park and could make his debut when Newcastle host Liverpool at St James’ Park on Monday, 25 August.

Hungry to Improve

Ramsey is seen as a player Newcastle’s coaching staff have long admired for his athleticism, versatility and potential to develop further under Howe.

The midfielder himself pointed to Howe’s influence as a key factor in his decision, following the example of Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento, who all became England internationals under the manager’s guidance.

While Newcastle are well-stocked in midfield, Ramsey is expected to play a key role as Howe rotates his squad across four competitions this season.

His arrival also continues Newcastle’s trend of investing in young players with Premier League pedigree.

Despite strengthening in key areas, Newcastle still face questions up front after Callum Wilson’s departure and Alexander Isak’s continued absence.

Anthony Gordon was forced to lead the line in the season opener, and the club maintain interest in Brentford striker Yoane Wissa as they seek a new goalscorer.
