The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has praised Nigeria for successfully implementing “Operation Safe Corridor,” calling it a leading example of how former combatants can be rehabilitated and reintegrated into society.

The commendation came from Mrs. Ogechi Daniels, IOM’s Deputy Director-General for Operations, during a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, confirmed the meeting on Tuesday in a statement.

Mrs. Daniels noted that what began as a programme focused on the North East has expanded to include the North West and North Central regions.

She revealed that IOM is ready to send specialists in disarmament, demobilisation, reintegration, and reconciliation (DDRR) to emerging areas of need, such as Zamfara State.

The official also highlighted the organisation’s efforts to strengthen data collection for disaster risk reduction, improve border management, and maintain robust early warning systems to mitigate security risks and support sustainable development.

Additionally, Daniels shared that IOM recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UK Development Office to initiate the fourth phase of its rehabilitation and community-based reintegration programmes.

She reiterated IOM’s dedication to facilitating the safe return and local integration of internally displaced persons, while emphasising collaborative research and development initiatives to ensure long-term impact.

In response, Gen. Musa acknowledged the valuable partnership between the Nigerian Armed Forces and IOM, particularly in the North-East.

He assured that the military remains committed to cooperating with IOM and other partners, even amid limited resources, noting, “We support everyone who helps make our mission easier.”
