A Yola businessman, Mamuda Duma, has been remanded in custody by the Chief Magistrate Court I in Adamawa State following allegations of engaging in an extramarital relationship with a married woman and reportedly persuading her to terminate a three-month pregnancy.
The case emerged after the woman’s husband, Ahmadu Lawal, lodged a formal complaint at the court, claiming that Duma, who lives in Wurojabbe, had been involved with his wife for several months.
Lawal explained that he discovered the affair in August 2024 and had repeatedly called Duma to warn him to end the relationship, but his efforts were ignored.
Lawal further alleged that the defendant had asked his wife to abort the pregnancy, an act which she reportedly carried out.
Concerned by these developments, Lawal approached the police in Yola for intervention.
He also claimed that after initial police involvement, Duma, together with some associates, requested that Lawal drop the case, promising to cease contact with his wife.
Believing the situation had been resolved, Lawal initially withdrew his complaint.
However, he later alleged that Duma continued to call his wife, prompting him to pursue the matter legally, with recorded phone conversations presented as evidence.
The complainant argued that Duma’s actions amounted to criminal offenses under Adamawa State’s Penal Code, specifically “enticing” and “abortion,” referencing Sections 315 and 203.
In court, following the reading of the charges by the complainant’s counsel, Ibrahim Hamman Gurin, the defendant denied all allegations.
Duma was represented by lawyer H. I. Ibrahim during the proceedings.
Chief Magistrate Muhammed Njidda subsequently ordered that Duma remain in prison custody, with the case adjourned to September 1, 2025, for the start of trial.
The case has sparked local discussions around marital fidelity, legal accountability, and the consequences of inducing abortion, bringing attention to the strict provisions of the Penal Code in Adamawa State.
