The intervention drastically lowers the cost of dialysis sessions from the previous N50,000 per session to only N12,000.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a landmark subsidy initiative to reduce the financial burden of kidney dialysis treatment for Nigerians.

According to a statement released by presidential aide, Sunday Dare, the intervention drastically lowers the cost of dialysis sessions from the previous N50,000 per session to only N12,000.

This decisive move, is expected to bring immense relief to thousands of citizens battling kidney-related illnesses across the country.

The subsidy, he explained, highlights the administration’s commitment to making critical healthcare services more affordable and accessible to ordinary Nigerians.

Dare further revealed that the programme has already commenced in major federal hospitals across the federation’s six geopolitical zones.

Among the facilities currently offering subsidised dialysis treatment are:

1. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, Lagos

2. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja

3. University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan

4. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri

5. University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri

6. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta

7. Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos

8. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Azare

9. University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin

10. University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar

He emphasised that additional federal medical centres and teaching hospitals will be incorporated into the scheme before the end of the year, ensuring that more Nigerians in different parts of the country benefit from this intervention.

Highlighting the government’s broader efforts in the health sector, Dare recalled that President Tinubu had, in the previous year, approved free cesarean sections (C-sections) for pregnant women in federal hospitals.

This measure was designed to improve maternal healthcare outcomes and reduce preventable maternal mortality, which remains a challenge in Nigeria.

By implementing these initiatives, the Tinubu administration has reaffirmed its resolve to prioritise citizens’ health and well-being, while strengthening federal hospitals’ capacity to deliver essential and life-saving medical services to Nigerians.
