Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong has strongly criticized Israel’s decision to revoke visas for Australian diplomats, calling it an “unjustified reaction”.

This move comes after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Australia would recognize the state of Palestine.

Wong emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy, stating, “at a time when dialogue and diplomacy are needed more than ever, the Netanyahu government is isolating Israel and undermining international efforts towards peace and a two-state solution”.

In her statement, Wong reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to a two-state solution, saying, “we will continue to work with partners as we contribute international momentum to a two-state solution, a ceasefire in Gaza, and release of the hostages”.

This stance is in line with international efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. Wong’s comments highlight the growing tensions between Israel and countries that recognize Palestinian statehood, including Australia.

Similar diplomatic tensions have been observed in other countries, such as Jordan, which condemned Israel’s decision to revoke the diplomatic status of Norwegian envoys.

Jordan’s Ambassador Sufyan Qudah stressed that Tel Aviv’s reactions to European countries’ decisions to recognize the State of Palestine are inconsistent with international law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide also criticized the move, warning that it could hinder Norway’s ability to assist the Palestinian population and have repercussions for relations with Israel.

The US Department of State has also weighed in on the issue, describing Israel’s decision as counterproductive.

Spokesman Matthew Miller expressed concerns that the decision undermines Norwegian efforts to foster dialogue and collaboration. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how these diplomatic tensions will impact international efforts towards a peaceful resolution.
