World No.2 Iga Swiatek boosted her confidence ahead of the US Open by winning the Cincinnati Open for the first time, defeating Jasmine Paolini 7-5 6-4 in Sunday’s final.

The 23-year-old Pole, fresh from her Wimbledon triumph in July, claimed her 24th career title and 11th at the prestigious WTA 1000 level.

Remarkably, it was her first trophy in Cincinnati, a tournament where she had never previously advanced beyond the semi-finals in six attempts.

Swiatek will now attempt to capture a second US Open crown — having first won at Flushing Meadows in 2022 — when the final Grand Slam of the season begins on Sunday.

Strong Omens for New York

Swiatek’s victory could bode well: in each of the last two years, the players who won the Cincinnati singles titles went on to lift the US Open (Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic in 2023; Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner in 2024).

Aces Make the Difference

Although Swiatek hit seven double faults in the final, she countered with nine aces, while Paolini — playing her third final of the season — failed to hit any.

The Italian pushed hard, leading 3-0 early and rallying from 3-5 to 5-5 in the first set, but Swiatek’s serving power proved decisive as she extended her head-to-head record against Paolini to 6-0.

“It means a lot to me. This year I really wanted it,” Swiatek said. “It’s nice to check off the list another tournament that I haven’t won. This season hasn’t been easy, but I’ve worked hard to improve.”

Paolini was philosophical after defeat:

“When the rallies were going, I felt good. The serves were the difference. When she needed an ace, she hit an ace. It was a positive tournament for me, but I just need to improve.”

Boulter Progresses in Cleveland

Elsewhere, Katie Boulter reached the last 16 at the Tennis in the Land event in Cleveland, beating China’s Yue Yuan 6-4 6-3, the British No.1 hit eight double faults but balanced them with three aces.
