The Nigerian U-20 national team, Flying Eagles, have entered the final phase of preparations for the FIFA U-20 World Cup scheduled to begin on September 27 in Chile.
The team is camping at the NFF/FIFA Goal Project in Abuja, where head coach Aliyu Zubairu is leading the squad through the last and most crucial stage of their three-phase training program.
Zubairu, speaking to journalists, expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far.
“We are at top gear now,” the coach said. “We have invited some players from abroad – Nigerian players in Europe – and some from within the country. Even though most of those invited from abroad have not yet been released by their clubs, we are pushing ahead with the ones available to ensure we build a formidable team.”

Stockbrink Returns After Injury Setback
One of the notable names in camp is David Stockbrink, a highly rated talent from Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands. Stockbrink missed the AFCON U-20 tournament earlier this year after suffering an injury in training.
“We are still looking at him,” Zubairu said. “When we invited him for AFCON, it was based on recommendations, but he got injured in Casablanca and couldn’t feature. This is his first training session with us, so we will continue to monitor him closely.”

Eyes on World Cup Glory
The Flying Eagles reached the final of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, and expectations are high as they prepare for the global stage.
Zubairu expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform well in Chile, provided the best players are made available.
“If we are able to get our best legs, and if clubs in Europe release some of our top players, I believe Nigeria can rest assured that this team will prove its worth at the World Cup,” he said.
Nigeria, a two-time finalist at the U-20 World Cup, will be hoping to go one step further this year and clinch the trophy for the first time.
