The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has confirmed that Bayelsa State has formally declared its intention to host the 2028 National Sports Festival (NSF).

Olopade, who was in Yenagoa the state capital on Monday, said the visit was part of the evaluation process to assess the state’s readiness for the biennial competition.

“Today in Yenagoa, I had the privilege of engaging with key stakeholders as Bayelsa State officially declared its intention to host the National Sports Festival in 2028,” Olopade said.

“Alongside the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, Daniel Igali, we discussed the state’s readiness and vision for the festival. I also led the team on an inspection of facilities in Bayelsa as part of the evaluation process for their bid.

The National Sports Festival is not just a competition; it is a celebration of unity, talent, and the future of Nigerian sports. Bayelsa’s commitment is commendable, and we look forward to what lies ahead.”

If successful, Bayelsa will host the festival for the first time in its history.

The NSF was last staged earlier this year in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while Enugu State has already been confirmed as hosts for the 2026 edition.

Olopade Intervenes in Wrestler’s Suspension

During his Yenagoa visit, Olopade also addressed the lingering suspension of veteran Nigerian wrestler Amas Daniel, who has been barred from competition since 2023.

The NSC DG engaged protesting youths over the issue and later convened a meeting between Daniel and the wrestling federation to broker peace.

“We have been able to resolve it. It was the federation taking disciplinary action against him for being unruly. A simple apology to the federation would have resolved it, but I am meeting with them, and I am sure it will be resolved,” Olopade assured.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, also paid a morale-boosting visit to Team Nigeria Wrestlers in Yenagoa, as they intensify preparations for the Senior World Wrestling Championship in Zagreb, Croatia, this September.

He reassured the athletes of the continuous support of the NSC and indeed their nation’s unwavering support, noting that training grants for those in the Elite programme will begin rolling out shortly, while also assuring them of handsome rewards should they excel in Croatia.

He further emphasized wrestling’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s medal prospects for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
