Belgium winger Johan Bakayoko has credited a personal conversation with Jürgen Klopp as the decisive factor behind his summer move from PSV Eindhoven to RB Leipzig.

The 22-year-old attacker was one of Europe’s most sought-after prospects, attracting interest from Everton, Nottingham Forest, and Borussia Dortmund before choosing Leipzig in July.

His arrival came during Leipzig’s first transfer window under Klopp, who was appointed Red Bull’s global head of football in January following his departure from Liverpool.

Speaking to AFP and other media outlets on Tuesday, Bakayoko said his chat with Klopp convinced him to commit to Leipzig’s project.

“When I talked with Jürgen Klopp, I thought: ‘OK, I have to go.’

That was the trigger point for me. He said: ‘We are here to make you better. We need you.’ And that’s exactly what I wanted to hear. It felt like a perfect match.”

Red Bull Network a Key Factor

Bakayoko joins a growing list of young talents recruited into the Red Bull football network, which includes Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, New York Red Bulls in MLS, and clubs in Brazil and Japan, as well as minority stakes in Paris FC and Leeds United.

The winger said Leipzig’s track record of developing players for elite-level football made the move attractive.

Xavi Simons “Unfazed” by Transfer Speculation

Bakayoko also defended teammate Xavi Simons, who has been heavily linked with a summer move to Chelsea, insisting the Dutch midfielder has remained focused during pre-season.

“When you’re good, that’s what happens. Rumours are just part of football.

Xavi is professional. He doesn’t look like a player distracted by other clubs.”

Rising Star for Belgium

A graduate of PSV’s youth academy, Bakayoko has already earned 18 caps for Belgium, scoring once, and is seen as a central figure in the national team’s next generation.

His speed, dribbling, and direct play style are expected to complement Leipzig’s dynamic attack alongside Loïs Openda.

Tough Start to Life in Germany

Bakayoko’s Bundesliga debut could hardly come on a bigger stage, with Leipzig opening their campaign away to defending champions Bayern Munich on Friday.
