A Hamas delegation in Cairo has received a new proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, outlining a 60-day truce and hostage release in two batches.

According to a Palestinian official speaking to newsmen on condition of anonymity, “the proposal is a framework agreement to launch negotiations on a permanent ceasefire”.

This development comes as part of ongoing efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States to broker a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

The proposal’s details reveal a structured approach to easing tensions in the region. By dividing hostage releases into two batches, the plan aims to build trust and facilitate further negotiations.

Hamas has confirmed it will engage in internal discussions and consultations with other Palestinian factions to review the proposal carefully.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty emphasized the urgency of the situation during a visit to the Rafah border crossing with Gaza. “As we speak now, there are Palestinian and Qatari delegations present on Egyptian soil working to intensify efforts to put an end to the systematic killing and starvation,” he said.

Abdelatty highlighted Cairo’s ongoing work with Qatar and the US to secure a 60-day truce that includes the release of hostages and Palestinian detainees, along with the unhindered flow of humanitarian and medical assistance to Gaza.

Despite previous negotiations in Doha failing to yield a breakthrough, the latest proposal underscores the continued international efforts to find a peaceful resolution.

Hamas has shown initial approval, while Israel continues to examine the proposal. The Palestinian group has been engaged in talks with Egyptian officials to secure a lasting ceasefire in the war, now in its 23rd month.

The situation remains complex, with deep-seated concerns on both sides. However, the persistence of international mediators and the willingness of Hamas to engage in discussions offer a glimmer of hope for a potential resolution.

As the situation unfolds, the focus will be on whether this new proposal can pave the way for meaningful negotiations and an eventual ceasefire.
