A tragic accident occurred in Lagos on Monday morning when a speeding Toyota Highlander SUV, with registration number APP 150 EY, crashed into a stationary commercial bus at the Volkswagen bus stop, inward Mile 2, claiming the life of the SUV driver on the spot.

Eyewitnesses disclosed that the Highlander, reportedly travelling at high speed, lost control before ramming into a painted T4 commercial bus (KJA 328 XH), which was indiscriminately picking up passengers along the roadside.

The violent impact left the SUV badly damaged, while the commercial bus also sustained significant dents.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials swiftly moved to the scene.

They secured the accident area, evacuated the deceased from the wreckage, and handed over the body to operatives of the Ojo Police Division.

The remains were later deposited at the C-Niger Mortuary in Abule Ado for proper documentation.

The accident caused heavy gridlock along the usually busy Mile 2 corridor.

However, LASTMA officers coordinated traffic flow and oversaw the removal of the damaged vehicles, which were towed to the Ojo Police Division for further investigation.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his deep condolences to the family of the deceased, praying for divine strength for them in this moment of grief.

He described the loss of life as a needless tragedy that could have been avoided with safer road practices.

Bakare-Oki strongly condemned reckless driving and indiscriminate passenger pickups by commercial bus operators.

He urged them to always use government-approved bus stops, noting that arbitrary stopping along highways exposes drivers and passengers to grave dangers.

The LASTMA boss cautioned motorists against speeding and stressed the need for regular vehicle checks—particularly braking systems—before embarking on journeys.

He emphasised that preventive measures are essential to curbing recurring accidents in Lagos.

“The sanctity of human life must never be compromised by recklessness on our highways.

“The Lagos State Government, through LASTMA, will continue to intensify enforcement operations and sustain public enlightenment campaigns to forestall avoidable tragedies of this nature,” Bakare-Oki said.
