Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new four-year deal, just five days after being handed the armband by head coach Thomas Frank.

The Argentina international, 27, has extended his stay at Spurs until the summer of 2029, ending speculation over his future after interest from Atletico Madrid earlier this summer, his previous contract had just two years left to run.

Romero, who lifted the UEFA Europa League with Tottenham last season and was named player of the tournament, described his decision as “fantastic” for both him and the club.

“I’m very happy here. For me, this club is the best in the world,” Romero said.

“The last two weeks, first becoming captain and now signing the contract, it’s a fantastic decision. My message to the fans is thank you for your amazing support every day and every match.”

The centre-back, who joined Spurs permanently from Atalanta in 2022 for around £42m, has become a cornerstone of the team. He scored in his first game as captain during the UEFA Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain and helped Spurs open their Premier League campaign with a 3-0 win over Burnley.

Romero’s future was a key factor in negotiations with Frank when the Dane accepted the Tottenham job in June following Ange Postecoglou’s departure.

Spurs quickly moved to tie him down once he was appointed captain, ensuring they secured the long-term services of one of their most important players.

Frank hailed his skipper’s influence, saying:

“I see a very big and very good player. What I like about him and why I chose him as captain is his leadership qualities. There is a big respect for him from the players and he sets the standards off the pitch as well.”

Romero, who walked onto the pitch with his son before Saturday’s match, added that he was motivated to chase further silverware under Frank.

“After winning the Europa League, it’s a special season. We want to win again this year – another trophy would be important for everyone.”

Meanwhile, Spurs also confirmed that full-back Djed Spence has also signed a new contract.

The 24-year-old has been rewarded for his breakthrough campaign, which saw him make 35 appearances after being handed his full debut in December.

The England youth international, once labelled a “club signing” by former manager Antonio Conte, endured loan spells at Rennes, Leeds and Genoa before forcing his way into Tottenham’s first team last season, his fresh deal extends his stay until 2029.

With both Romero and Spence committing their futures, Tottenham continue to build stability under Frank as they aim to build on their Europa League triumph and push for further success this season.
