The Arewa Cohesion for Peace, Unity and Development Initiative has felicitated with former Nigerian Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on the celebration of his 84th birthday anniversary, describing him as a rare statesman, a unifying father figure, and a visionary leader whose wisdom continues to illuminate Nigeria’s path towards peace, unity and progress.

In a goodwill message issued in Kaduna on Sunday, the Initiative’s Director General, Dr. Abdullahi Idris, extolled the former Head of State for his immeasurable contributions to nation-building and for remaining a voice of guidance in national difficulties.
According to Dr. Idris, “General Babangida is not only remembered for his years of service as Head of State, but he has also continued to play the role of a revered elder whose foresight and counsel remain invaluable.
His life exemplifies commitment to unity, justice, and progress, values that Nigeria needs more than ever as it navigates present-day challenges.”
The DG recalled with pride the visit of the Initiative’s leadership, led by its Chairman, Board of Trustees and former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, to General Babangida’s Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.
He noted that during the visit, the former president’s warm reception, alongside his endorsement of the Initiative’s mission to strengthen peace, harmony, and sustainable development in Northern Nigeria, greatly encouraged their vision and strengthened their resolve.
He added that Babangida’s recognition of the group’s objectives was a moral boost and a testament to his enduring passion for a peaceful and united Nigeria.
“His fatherly advice remains a source of inspiration to us as an organisation and to millions of Nigerians who see in him a mentor and a guide,” Dr. Idris said.
The Initiative emphasised that Babangida’s leadership qualities transcend his tenure in office. His life continues to be defined by his patriotic spirit, broad-mindedness, and unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential to thrive as one indivisible nation.
“General Babangida has, over the years, demonstrated that leadership is not merely about holding office but about impacting lives and shaping destinies.
“His commitment to national cohesion, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence remains exemplary.
“We believe that his legacy will continue to inspire leaders across generations,” the statement added.
The group concluded its felicitation by offering special prayers for Allah’s abundant blessings upon the elder statesman.
They wished him a long life in good health, divine wisdom, and enduring peace, affirming that Nigeria and the North, in particular, still benefit immensely from his vast experience and fatherly guidance.
