Nigeria’s largest container terminal, APM Terminals Apapa, has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to transforming the nation’s maritime industry through increased investments in physical infrastructure, technology-driven solutions, and strategic collaborations.

The company made this declaration during its annual Partners’ Engagement Forum in Lagos, a gathering of key stakeholders across the logistics chain, including shipping lines, government agencies, importers, exporters, and freight forwarders.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals Nigeria, Frederik Klinke, noted that the company is prioritizing investments that will not only boost efficiency at the ports but also strengthen Nigeria’s trade competitiveness in the global market.

“We are committed to delivering faster, more transparent, and customer-focused services at Apapa port.

Our focus remains on upgrading infrastructure, improving digital platforms, and building strong partnerships that can help Nigeria overcome supply chain challenges,” Klinke said.

Klinke acknowledged that congestion, fluctuating freight costs, and clearance delays continue to affect global and local supply chains.

However, he emphasized that APM Terminals is taking a localized, problem-solving approach to ensure Nigerian ports remain competitive.

Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen highlighted recent milestones, including:

The launch of regular rail freight services between Apapa and Moniya, which now run three times weekly, reducing heavy reliance on road transport.

Expansion of the terminal’s examination yard to ease cargo inspections.

Enhanced barge operations to promote cargo movement by water.

Improved container scanning and inspection systems for faster processing.

Tailored export packages designed to support Nigerian exporters with quicker clearance and access to international markets.

Knudsen said these achievements demonstrate the value of collaboration among stakeholders, urging continued dialogue to identify bottlenecks and develop innovative solutions.

APM Terminals Apapa’s Commercial Manager, Kayode Daniel, stressed that customers remain central to the company’s strategy.

“We do not just see our clients as service users but as growth partners.

Every milestone we achieve is proof of what can be accomplished when there is mutual trust and shared vision,” Daniel said.

To support this vision, the company has expanded its online customer portal, enabling clients to initiate transactions, track cargo, and receive real-time updates remotely.

The forum also featured insights from government agencies operating at the ports:

Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA): Lagos Port Complex Manager, Lawal Adebowale, disclosed that the NPA is deepening channels to accommodate larger vessels while upgrading berth infrastructure and pilot training.

NAFDAC: Director of Port Inspection, Olaniran Olakunle, revealed that the agency has rolled out a fully automated clearance system for drugs, food products, and medical devices, significantly cutting manual delays.

Nigeria Customs Service: Comptroller of the Apapa Area Command, represented by Assistant Comptroller Abubakar Usman, emphasized that compliance with proper documentation remains vital for speedy clearance.

Nigerian Shippers’ Council: Director of Regulatory Services, Margaret Ogbonna, called for more inter-agency collaboration to harmonize procedures and align port operations with national trade strategies.

A panel discussion themed “Terminal Progress and Future Outlook” explored how automation, digital platforms, and real-time data sharing could further reduce delays and enhance transparency.

The event concluded with awards recognizing outstanding customers who have contributed to trade facilitation and operational excellence.

Participants agreed that strengthening partnerships through such forums is essential to unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential and positioning its ports as regional trade hubs in West Africa.

With sustained investments in infrastructure, technology, and collaboration, APM Terminals Apapa is signaling that it intends to remain at the forefront of Nigeria’s maritime growth story.
