Glasner insists Eze will feature in Palace’s European bow amid Spurs talks

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner says Eberechi Eze will play in the club’s historic first European fixture on Thursday, despite ongoing transfer talks with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Eagles qualified for the European football for the first time in history after lifting the FA Cup last season, but were demoted from the Europa League over UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules and will host Norwegian side Fredrikstad at Selhurst Park (20:00 BST).

Eze has been strongly linked with a move to Spurs, who are accelerating negotiations for the 27-year-old forward after holding discussions since the start of the week.

His contract previously contained a £60m release clause – plus £8m in add-ons – but Palace sources say that clause has now expired, leaving Spurs attempting to strike a deal below that figure.

Speaking after Palace’s goalless draw at Chelsea on Sunday, Glasner was adamant Eze remains committed to the squad.

“There are a lot of rumours about Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi, but they were 100% with this group… and they have proved that in a big way,” Glasner told Sky Sports.

“He will come tomorrow to the training ground, Tuesday is off, we take Wednesday and I expect him to be back playing for us against Fredrikstad.”

Transfer uncertainty around Palace stars

Palace face uncertainty over two of their most valuable players, alongside Spurs’ pursuit of Eze, England centre-back Marc Guehi is the subject of interest from Premier League champions Liverpool.

The 25-year-old captain has entered the final year of his contract and chairman Steve Parish confirmed last week the club will sanction a sale this summer to avoid losing him for free in 2026. Palace are holding out for around £40m, but Liverpool are pushing for a lower fee.

Glasner, however, insists that as long as both players remain committed, they will be central to Palace’s plans.

“Everyone could see the performances against Liverpool [in the Community Shield] and today [against Chelsea] they were 100% aligned with this team and Crystal Palace,” the Austrian coach told Match of the Day.

“As long as they are 100% committed, they will play, because they are so good.”

European rules

Even if Eze or Guehi feature against Fredrikstad, UEFA regulations would still permit them to play for another team later in the competition, players who appear in qualifying rounds are not cup-tied for the league phase of European tournaments.

Palace are playing in Europe for the first time in their 119-year history, though they were originally due to compete in the Europa League before being demoted to the Conference League due to UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules.
