Thousands of people are expected to gather in cities and towns across 34 states on Saturday, for a national day of protest against Republican redistricting protests in Texas and elsewhere.
The “Fight the Trump Takeover” protests, anchored in Austin, Texas, with other sites spread nationwide, aim to defend democracy and fair representation.
Organized by over three dozen groups, including the Democratic National Committee, these demonstrations represent a growing movement of people refusing to watch their democracy be manipulated through redistricting schemes designed to rig future elections.
The protests are a response to Republican efforts to redraw electoral maps in Texas and other states, which Democrats argue is an attempt to suppress voting power and manipulate election outcomes.
“Trump knows the only way he can hold the majority after his budget betrayal is by changing the rules in the middle of the game to avoid accountability for ripping healthcare and food away from millions of Americans,” said DNC Chair Ken Martin in a statement.

The demonstrations, dubbed “Fight the Trump Takeover,” will take place across 20 states, with events hosted in cities such as Palm Coast, Jacksonville, and Tallahassee in Florida.
The protests highlight the ongoing debate over voting rights and democracy in the US. Democrats are fighting back against Republican redistricting plans, which they claim are designed to dilute the voting power of certain groups.
The issue has sparked intense debate and mobilized people across the country to take action. Indivisible, a grassroots movement of thousands of local groups, is also working to elect progressive leaders, rebuild democracy, and defeat the Trump agenda.
Some Democratic leaders are calling for responsive redistricting, where blue states would redraw their maps in response to gerrymandering in red states.
This approach aims to counter the Republican strategy of manipulating electoral maps to gain an advantage. Governors and state legislators are encouraged to make public commitments to defend democracy and protect voting rights.

The “Come and Take It Pledge” is one such initiative, where Democratic governors publicly commit to welcoming targeted lawmakers, refusing cooperation with partisan law enforcement, and calling on the Department of Justice to investigate.
As the protests take place, people across the US will be showing their support for fair representation and democracy. The events are a testament to the ongoing struggle for voting rights and the importance of protecting democratic institutions.
