Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has tipped new striker Benjamin Šeško to strike fear into Premier League defences, insisting the Slovenian is “ready” to face Arsenal in Sunday’s season opener at Old Trafford.
Šeško, 22, joined United from RB Leipzig last weekend in a deal worth up to £73.7 million ($99 million). With his blend of physical presence and clinical finishing, he is set to spearhead Amorim’s attacking overhaul after the club’s worst league campaign since 1973-74.
The forward could line up alongside fellow summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in what promises to be a new-look United frontline.
“He can play different types of football,” Amorim told reporters today. “He has great potential, and I can see Ben being a striker for Manchester United for a lot of years. That’s why we paid so much money — to have a striker who can make history here.”
Asked if Šeško would start against Arsenal, Amorim said:
“Physically, he’s ready. That is a big component in our league. He’s smart, always asking questions, always thinking. He spends all afternoon working on his fitness — he’s obsessed with football. You don’t need to tell him about the pressure or the physicality; he’s already prepared.”
Šeško scored 21 goals for Leipzig last season and has impressed Amorim at United’s Carrington training complex with his work ethic and professionalism.
His arrival, however, has cast uncertainty over the future of fellow striker Rasmus Højlund, who has been linked with a move to AC Milan despite expressing his desire to stay.
“He is one more option,” Amorim said of the Dane. “We will see. We are focused on this game, and Rasmus is still our player.”
United host Arsenal in what will be Amorim’s first Premier League match in charge in full season, aiming to make a statement against one of last season’s title contenders.
