Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has accused his predecessor, former Governor Godwin Obaseki, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of showing little interest in the progress and welfare of the state.

Speaking at the final campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekpoma for Edo Central senatorial district, the governor described the previous administration as largely transactional, focused on personal or political gains rather than meaningful development.

Governor Okpebholo highlighted the contrast between past governance and his current administration, emphasizing the visible improvements already underway.

“People are asking about the funds and resources that existed before. I can tell you clearly: Obaseki and the PDP were not committed to developing Edo State. Their focus was not on the people but on their own agenda,” he stated.

He reassured the electorate that his government would continue to implement projects that directly benefit communities, promising more infrastructural developments and social initiatives across the state.

In Ovia federal constituency, Deputy Governor Philip Idahosa expressed confidence that the APC would secure a decisive victory in the upcoming by-election. He encouraged supporters to actively participate and exercise their voting rights.

“Our engagement with residents over the past days shows that we are likely to command overwhelming support, potentially winning over 90 percent of the votes,” Idahosa said. He added that Edo State has historically been a stronghold of the party, tracing the legacy from the Action Congress (AC) and ACN to the present APC.

“It is not because of the shortcomings of the previous administration that we dominate politically here. Edo has always supported our party,” he emphasized.

In preparation for the by-election, five political parties—the APC, African Democratic Congress (ADC), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Action Alliance (AA), and PDP—signed a peace agreement in Benin City to promote a peaceful and orderly electoral process. Security agencies were present to witness the signing.

Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Professor Anugbum Onuaha, confirmed that all electoral materials have been distributed to polling units. Chief Sam Igbe, Chairman of the Peace Committee, represented by Chief Jackson Igbinovia, the Iyase of Benin, urged political parties, candidates, and voters to maintain peace and civility throughout the election period.

Governor Okpebholo’s campaign message underscores his administration’s commitment to visible development and responsive governance while preparing the state for a peaceful and credible electoral exercise.
