Reigning Premier League champions Liverpool will open the defence of their Premier League crown tonight against Bournemouth in what promises to be a deeply emotional evening at Anfield, as the club and supporters pay tribute to the late Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva.

Jota and André tragically lost their lives in a road traffic accident in July. Ahead of kick-off, the Anfield crowd will unite in honouring their memory, with Jota’s wife, children and extended family in attendance for the ceremony.

Manager Arne Slot reflected on the occasion in his pre-match programme notes, describing it as a moment of collective grief and solidarity.

“We know this will be a very emotional occasion, given it is the first league game since we lost Diogo and André,” Slot wrote. “The tributes paid throughout the football world, and especially within the LFC community, have been truly special. It is important that, as a club, we show his family they will always have our love and support. We are there for them always.”

Focus Returns to Football

While emotion will define the evening, Slot was quick to warn his side not to underestimate Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth, who finished ninth last season.

“There is nothing like Anfield under the lights, and we are looking forward to starting our campaign,” he said. “Bournemouth have very good players and a very good manager. We welcome them to our home, but we must be ready.”

The Dutchman praised his squad’s attacking improvements during pre-season but urged greater defensive discipline.

“We are creating more promising situations than we did for much of last season, but we can be better defensively,” he noted. “What made us strong last season was our ability to win by narrow margins and keep clean sheets. That’s something we want to continue.”

New signings Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez have already impressed Slot, who urged the Anfield faithful to lift the players once more.

“Your support is never taken for granted. It will be crucial as we look to defend our title,” he said.

‘Forever 20’ – Liverpool’s Lasting Tribute

Liverpool have also launched a commemorative “Forever 20” T-shirt in Jota’s memory, with all profits going to the LFC Foundation to fund a grassroots football programme in his name.

The shirt features an image of Jota’s trademark heart celebration, lyrics from his fan song, and the words “Forever 20.” The club has retired the number 20 shirt across all levels — including LFC Women and the Academy — as a permanent mark of respect.

Fans can also have “Diogo J. 20” printed on the back of their shirts, with all profits supporting the same grassroots initiative.

Kick-off at Anfield is scheduled for 8pm BST.
