The Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) will today, Thursday, August 14, host a historic gathering in Lagos to celebrate its 50th anniversary, bringing together the most influential figures in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Among the dignitaries expected at the Golden Jubilee celebration are the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), Bayo Ojulari; the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri; and the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Gbenga Komolafe. Other leading executives, policymakers, and international stakeholders will also be in attendance.

The event, themed “Pioneering the Future of Energy in Africa,” aims not only to celebrate NAPE’s remarkable legacy but also to chart a strategic roadmap for the next half-century of Nigeria’s energy journey.

Founded in 1975 by visionary Nigerian geoscientists, NAPE has grown into Africa’s largest professional petroleum geoscience association. Over five decades, the association has played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s oil and gas policies, bridging the gap between academia and industry, and advocating for sustainable energy development.

Speaking at a pre-event media briefing in Lagos, NAPE President Johnbosco Uche highlighted the association’s enduring impact. He noted that NAPE has been instrumental in promoting technical excellence, fostering research, and driving innovation within the sector.

“NAPE’s 50 years of service have been anchored on professionalism, innovation, and collaboration. As we look forward, our focus will remain on shaping the future of energy in Africa in ways that balance sustainability with economic growth,” Uche said.

One of NAPE’s most impactful initiatives is its University Assistance Programme, which has supported over 60 geoscience departments in Nigerian universities with modern laboratory equipment, industry software, textbooks, and mentorship opportunities. This programme has directly contributed to producing world-class geoscientists who now work in major oil companies across the globe.

In addition, NAPE has consistently championed policy dialogues on frontier basin exploration, gas development as a transition fuel, and balancing energy transition with Nigeria’s economic realities.

Today’s event will feature goodwill messages from top government officials and energy executives, alongside a CEO panel discussion on unlocking future opportunities in Africa’s energy sector.

The celebration will also recognise 50 distinguished individuals and institutions whose contributions have shaped Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. Awards will be presented during a grand gala night, celebrating excellence, leadership, and service to nation-building.

Uche emphasised that the Golden Jubilee is not merely a ceremonial milestone but a call to action.

“Energy is not just about oil and gas. It is about people, prosperity, and possibilities. Our future lies in embracing new technologies, nurturing talent, and ensuring that Africa’s voice remains strong in global energy conversations,” he said.

Industry experts note that NAPE’s 50th anniversary comes at a critical moment for Nigeria’s energy sector. With global oil markets facing volatility, climate change pressures, and the rise of renewable energy, African petroleum professionals are under growing pressure to adapt.

By convening top stakeholders at this landmark event, NAPE is positioning itself as a central forum for shaping Nigeria’s energy transition strategy while safeguarding the nation’s economic interests.

Former NAPE President and energy consultant Dr. Adaobi Nwankwo described the event as “a turning point for Nigerian geoscience.”

“The conversations we have now will influence investment flows, exploration strategies, and talent development for decades. This anniversary is both a celebration and a strategic intervention,” she said.

Since its inception, NAPE has grown from a small group of dedicated geoscientists to a global network of petroleum professionals, academics, and corporate partners. The association’s conferences, workshops, and publications are widely recognised as essential knowledge platforms for Africa’s energy industry.

In the past decade, NAPE has expanded its focus beyond oil exploration to include renewable energy integration, carbon capture technologies, and energy governance reforms, reflecting the evolving global energy landscape.
