Manchester United are close to finalising Toby Collyer’s temporary move to West Bromwich Albion, with the midfielder expected to join the Championship side on loan for the 2025/26 season.
The 21-year-old had been linked with a possible return to Brighton & Hove Albion as part of United’s pursuit of Carlos Baleba. However, according to the Manchester Evening News, Collyer will not be included in any negotiations for the Cameroon international, with Brighton valuing Baleba at around £100m — a figure beyond United’s current budget after a busy summer in the transfer market.

Instead, Collyer will head to the Hawthorns to work under new Baggies boss Ryan Mason as the club targets a promotion push. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, West Brom are understood to have beaten several other Championship suitors, including Sheffield Wednesday, to his signature.
From Brighton Prospect to Old Trafford
Collyer, born in Worthing just 10 miles from Brighton, came through the Seagulls’ academy and was widely regarded as one of the most talented midfielders in his age group before his release in 2022. United quickly snapped him up, impressed by his potential and tactical versatility.

Last season, he made 19 first-team appearances under Ruben Amorim, with his standout moment coming in January when he produced a dramatic goal-line clearance to secure a 1-0 win away at Fulham. He was also part of United’s pre-season tour of the United States this summer.
However, Amorim’s preferred system accommodates only two central midfielders — with one place firmly occupied by captain Bruno Fernandes — leaving Collyer facing increased competition for game time. With no European football on offer this season, United’s hierarchy agreed that a loan move would better aid his development.

West Brom’s Track Record
West Brom have a strong record of nurturing Premier League loanees, with Harvey Barnes a notable success story from his stint at the club in 2018/19. The Baggies hope Collyer can make a similar impact in their push for a return to the top flight.
Collyer is expected to complete the move in the coming days, with no option to buy included in the deal as United trust him for the future.
