Spanish giants Real Madrid have officially presented Argentine prodigy Franco Mastantuono at the club’s Valdebebas training complex, two months after reaching a landmark agreement with River Plate for his signature.

The highly-rated attacking midfielder arrives in Spain after a transfer saga that began over two years ago, when Los Blancos first registered their interest. The move, valued at €45 million, reportedly rises to around €63 million once taxes and fees are included—making Mastantuono one of the most expensive teenagers in football history.

His signing was finalised on Wednesday, August 13, the same day he turned 18, allowing him to complete all formalities and officially join the club. Mastantuono has already been in Madrid for several weeks to adapt to his new surroundings and begin light training.

Number 30 Shirt and Long-Term Deal

The new recruit has been handed the number 30 shirt for his debut season, meaning he can also be registered with Real Madrid Castilla if required. This is a strategic choice, as La Liga rules reserve numbers 1–25 for senior squad players; leaving one slot open could prove crucial if the club moves for another major signing before the transfer window closes.

Mastantuono has penned a seven-year contract until 2031, reflecting Real Madrid’s long-term faith in his potential.

Florentino Pérez’s Tribute

During the unveiling, club president Florentino Pérez welcomed Mastantuono in front of the media, his family, and senior officials:

“Today is another of those great days, full of emotion for all of us who feel a passion for Real Madrid. One of the greatest footballing talents to emerge in recent years is joining our club, and he does so on his 18th birthday. This is one of the most important days of your life, and the same goes for your family. They know very well how hard you’ve had to fight to get to this point.”

Pérez also paid tribute to River Plate, calling it “a centenary, legendary club” and recalling its role in shaping Real Madrid icon Alfredo Di Stéfano.

Mastantuono’s Promise to Fans

The teenager’s own speech drew applause as he vowed to give everything for the badge:

“It’s a dream come true as a footballer and as a person, to join Real Madrid, the biggest club in the world. I promise I will give my life to this jersey—it’s the dream I have always had. Today, it begins.”

He also thanked River Plate, his family, and Madrid’s coaching staff, adding:

“They’ll be playing alongside a fan on the pitch. I hope I can achieve big things at this club. Hala Madrid!”

Competition for Places

Mastantuono joins a midfield department packed with talent, including Arda Güler, Brahim Díaz, and the soon-to-return Jude Bellingham. However, manager Xabi Alonso is believed to be an admirer and sees him as a potential first-team contributor as early as this season, especially during Bellingham’s recovery from a shoulder injury.

What’s Next for Real Madrid?

Reports in Spain suggest that Madrid’s decision to leave a senior squad slot open could be linked to a potential late move for Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté. The club has also been monitoring midfield reinforcements, though Konaté appears the most likely incoming if terms can be agreed.

For now, all eyes will be on Mastantuono’s integration into the squad and whether he can follow in the footsteps of other Argentine stars who have worn the famous white shirt.
