Following a video conference between US President Donald Trump and the leaders of Germany, Finland, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, and the European Union, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine’s inclusion in peace talks regarding the Russia-Ukraine war is imperative. The discussion centered on the ongoing conflict before Trump’s scheduled meeting with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
According to French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump stressed the importance of Ukraine’s involvement in talks about territory in any potential ceasefire deal with Russia. Ukraine is hopeful that the meeting will serve as a European counterweight to the summit in Alaska, to which Kyiv has not been invited. This development highlights the complexities of international diplomacy and the challenges of finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Russia continues to make significant gains on the battlefield, with its Defence Ministry reporting that it struck Ukrainian positions in 136 districts and inflicted over 1,300 Ukrainian military casualties in the past day. This escalation underscores the urgent need for a negotiated settlement to the conflict.
Zelenskyy’s insistence on Ukraine’s participation in peace talks is consistent with previous statements from Ukrainian officials. In June, a delegation from Africa, including representatives from South Africa, Egypt, Senegal, Congo-Brazzaville, Comoros, Zambia, and Uganda, visited Ukraine and Russia to call for peace. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba emphasized that any peace initiative should respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity and not imply any cessation of Ukrainian territory.
The international community’s efforts to broker peace in Ukraine have been ongoing, with various proposals and negotiations taking place. However, finding a mutually acceptable solution remains a significant challenge due to the deep-seated differences between Russia and Ukraine. As the situation continues to unfold, the importance of Ukraine’s involvement in any peace talks cannot be overstated.
