Polish President Donald Tusk has warned that Russia may push for a decrease in NATO forces in countries such as Poland as part of talks about the future of Ukraine. Countries like Poland, which share a border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Oblast and are in close proximity to Russia, have often been among the strongest supporters of the mutual security pact.
According to Tusk, Russia’s intentions have been clear for several days. “We are hearing for the past several days that the Russians would very much like to include talks about reducing NATO’s presence, for example in Poland, in talks about the future of Ukraine,” he said.
Tusk emphasized the importance of building a strong and united group of states in relation to both Russia and other allies, like the United States. This unity is crucial in the face of potential negotiations that could impact NATO’s presence in Eastern Europe. “That is why it is so important that we build such a strong and united group of states, both in relation to Russia, but also in relation to other allies, like the United States,” Tusk stated.

European leaders are preparing for a meeting with US President Donald Trump, where they aim to convey a united stance on Russia. Tusk noted that the meeting’s objective is to have a significant impact on Russia, similar to the effect of sanctions. “The most important thing [is] that Europe convinces Donald Trump that one can’t trust Russia,” Tusk told reporters. This effort underscores the European leaders’ commitment to a cohesive approach in their dealings with Russia and the United States.
The context of these discussions is the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where NATO has been playing a supportive role. NATO’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has included providing unprecedented levels of support to Ukraine, helping to uphold its fundamental right to self-defense. The Alliance has also taken steps to strengthen its deterrence and defense posture, including enhancing forward defenses and increasing the number of high-readiness forces.
As Ukraine navigates its path towards potential peace talks with Russia, its inclusion in these discussions is seen as crucial. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s participation in any peace talks, ensuring that the country’s interests and security needs are addressed. NATO’s Secretary General has also expressed the desire to put Ukraine in a position of strength for any future peace talks with Russia, highlighting the Alliance’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in its negotiations.
