Newcastle United are on the verge of securing the signing of highly-rated Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey in a deal worth around £38 million.

The 24-year-old England Under-21 international, who has attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, is expected to sign a long-term contract at St James’ Park.

Ramsey will become Newcastle’s fourth major acquisition of the summer following the arrivals of Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw, and Aaron Ramsdale.

Transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano reports that negotiations between the two clubs are at an advanced stage, with an agreement described as “close.” Ramsey will hold key talks with Villa in the next 24 hours before deciding on his future. If terms are agreed, he will then enter discussions with Newcastle over personal terms.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is understood to be a long-time admirer of Ramsey and has been keen to strengthen his midfield ahead of the new Premier League season. Newcastle had a previous bid for the midfielder rejected but now look set to finally get their man, easing concerns over squad depth as the club prepares for Champions League football.

Ramsey, who has scored 17 goals in 167 appearances since making his Villa debut in 2019, was also the subject of interest from West Ham earlier this summer. However, he is believed to prefer a move to Newcastle, with the opportunity to play in Europe’s elite competition a key factor in his decision.

For Aston Villa, the transfer would represent pure profit, as Ramsey is a homegrown player. Intriguingly, Newcastle’s first league match of the season will be away at Villa Park, potentially pitting the midfielder against his former club immediately after his move.
