Newcastle United have completed the signing of AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw for £30m (€35m) plus £4.3m in add-ons.

The 24-year-old Germany international has penned a long-term contract at St James’ Park and will wear the number 12 shirt for the Magpies.

Speaking after the move was confirmed, Thiaw expressed his excitement at joining Eddie Howe’s side:

“I’m really excited to join this massive club. I can’t wait to start training, meet my new teammates and work with the staff. The gaffer showed me his vision for me as a player and for the club, which is really exciting. Newcastle speaks for itself — it’s a big club with passionate fans who I can’t wait to see at St James’ Park.”

Born in Düsseldorf, Thiaw began his career with FC Schalke 04 before moving to Milan in 2022, where he made 85 appearances and helped the club win the 2025 Italian Super Cup against rivals Inter Milan in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe hailed the arrival of a player he has “admired for a long time,” adding:

“Malick will add real quality to our defensive options. He’s still young but has valuable experience in the Champions League, Bundesliga and Serie A, which is a huge positive for us as we return to European competition this season.”

Thiaw featured against Newcastle in the goalless draw at the San Siro in September 2023’s Champions League group stage encounter. At international level, he was part of Germany’s squad that lifted the UEFA U21 European Championship in 2021.

What’s next for Newcastle?

The rest of Newcastle’s summer window is likely to be defined by the future of one player; Alexander Isak.

The Swedish striker is desperate to join Liverpool and believes his time at St James’ Park is over, but whether a deal materialises in the last few weeks remains to be seen.
