The recent surge of terrorist violence in Kwara State, particularly the brutal massacre in Ifelodun Local Government Area over the weekend, has raised serious security concerns among neighboring states.

Addressing concerns over the unrest, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information in Oyo State, spoke candidly about the developments.
In an interview with Nigerian Tribune correspondent, he described the escalating violence in Kwara as a serious threat that requires a strong and coordinated response.
“The security challenges unfolding in Kwara State are very worrying, not just for Kwara people but also for all neighboring states, including Oyo. This menace must be tackled decisively to prevent further loss of lives and property,” Oyelade asserted.

However, the Commissioner was quick to reassure residents of Oyo State about their safety and the proactive steps the state government is taking to guard against similar threats.
He emphasized that the current administration has demonstrated unwavering commitment to security, making Oyo one of the most secure states in the Southwest geopolitical zone. “For the people of Oyo State, the good news is that this government has been proactive and deliberate in safeguarding the lives and properties of its citizens,” he stated.
Central to Oyo’s security framework is the Amotekun Corps, the regional security outfit specifically designed to combat criminality and insecurity in the Southwest. According to Oyelade, Oyo’s Amotekun is the most robust and well-equipped among all the states in the region, reflecting the government’s serious investment in internal security.

The force currently operates a fleet of 181 vehicles and 450 motorcycles, allowing for rapid mobility and response across the state. Moreover, the personnel strength exceeds 2,500 officers, making it the largest Amotekun contingent in the Southwest.
Beyond manpower and vehicles, the Oyo State government continues to upgrade its security capabilities. The State Executive Council, under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, recently approved the purchase of two surveillance aircraft.

These aircraft will be outfitted with advanced monitoring equipment, enabling Amotekun operatives to conduct aerial reconnaissance and closely track the movements of suspected terrorists, illegal miners, and other criminal elements. This aerial support will significantly enhance intelligence gathering and rapid deployment, ensuring a more effective security response across the state.
Prince Oyelade concluded by reiterating the state government’s commitment to leveraging all available resources and collaborating closely with federal security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Air Force, and Police Force, to maintain peace and stability.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies while assuring them that Oyo State remains well-prepared to confront any security challenges.
As neighboring Kwara grapples with the rise in terrorist activities, Oyo State’s strong security architecture and strategic investments in Amotekun stand as a critical bulwark against the spread of violence, demonstrating a proactive and united front in protecting the people and promoting regional stability.
