The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has announced planned and unplanned power outages affecting multiple locations across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Kogi State. The company disclosed the development in separate public notices issued on Saturday and Sunday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

According to AEDC, the outage in parts of Abuja is the result of a technical fault, while the disruption in Kogi State is due to a planned maintenance exercise by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on the Okpella–Okene 132-kilovolt transmission line.

In Abuja, AEDC listed the following affected areas:

Zulu Community, Eco Bank, Guardian Newspaper and environs

ENL, Paradise Estate, FHA Guzape, Efab Classic Estate, Metro City Estate, Sticks & Stones, Yayala Estate, Trademore Estate, Choos Estate, Maxcare Plaza, Faith Plaza, Sunflower Plaza

Erifu Estate, DME Estate, Greenpath School, Earth Point Estate, Sunnyvale Estate, Brains & Hammer 1, 2, 4, Hunters Garden, Ecofitness, Brains & Hammer 3 Apo

Bamaga Tukur Street, Eye Clinic, Best Way Hotel, Franca Afegbua Crescent, Zone C, Defence College, Checkin Hotel, Abba Kyari Street, Adeyemi Adesoji Street, Start Right School, Zone E Extension

Idu, Karmo, Citec Mbora, Airport Road, Nile University, Base University, Karimajiji, Kuchingoro, and neighbouring areas

The company expressed regret over the disruption, stating:

“We regret to inform you that the current power outage affecting your area is due to a technical fault. Our technical teams are working to restore supply as quickly as possible.”

In Kogi, the areas affected include Okene township, Osisi, Kabba Junction, FCE, Osar, Mark Farm, Kabba, Isanlu, Ososo, Magogo, Ikare, Ihima, and surrounding locations. AEDC explained that the outage is linked to TCN’s planned maintenance on the Okpella–Okene transmission line on Sunday.

“This maintenance is part of our continued efforts to enhance service reliability and improve the power supply to your community. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding during this necessary activity,” AEDC stated.

The outages come amid increasing public concern over electricity supply stability in the FCT and North-Central Nigeria. Residents in some Abuja suburbs have recently complained about prolonged blackouts and irregular supply despite the new electricity tariff regime implemented earlier in the year.

Industry experts note that Abuja’s rapid urban expansion and growing industrial presence in Kogi State are putting more pressure on distribution infrastructure. Technical faults, ageing equipment, and insufficient transmission capacity have been recurring challenges.

AEDC has in recent months embarked on network upgrade projects, including transformer replacements, feeder line rehabilitation, and the installation of automated fault detection systems. The company says these investments are part of its commitment to improving power delivery and reducing downtime.

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria continues to carry out scheduled maintenance to ensure the integrity of the national grid. TCN has also announced plans to expand transmission capacity in the North-Central region, which could ease future distribution bottlenecks.

AEDC has urged affected customers to take necessary precautions during outages, including switching off electrical appliances to avoid damage when power is restored. The company advised residents to follow its verified social media handles for real-time updates on restoration progress.

With the latest disruption, both Abuja and Kogi residents are hoping for quicker turnaround times in resolving technical faults and completing scheduled maintenance, as power reliability remains critical for households, businesses, and public services in the region.
