Manchester United have completed the signing of Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £73.7m.

The 22-year-old Slovenia international has agreed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with United paying an initial £66.26m (€76.5m) plus £7.36m (€8.5m) in performance-related add-ons. He will be officially presented to supporters this afternoon ahead of the club’s final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina.

Sesko scored 39 goals in 87 appearances for Leipzig after joining from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023. Last season, his pace, physicality and clinical finishing established him as one of Europe’s most sought-after young strikers.

Speaking in his first interview as a United player, Sesko said:

“When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon. From the moment I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment the club has created. It is clearly the perfect place to reach my maximum level and fulfil all of my ambitions.”

United saw off competition from Newcastle United, who made two bids, the highest worth £69.7m plus add-ons. The Old Trafford club refused to enter a bidding war, ultimately paying less up front than Newcastle’s second offer. Officials were impressed by Sesko’s determination to join, despite the absence of Champions League football.

Director of football Jason Wilcox, who played a central role in the deal alongside director of recruitment Christopher Vivell and chief negotiator Matt Hargreaves, hailed the signing:

“Benjamin possesses a rare combination of electrifying pace and the ability to physically dominate defenders, making him one of the most exceptional young talents in world football. Our analysis confirmed he has the qualities and personality to thrive at Manchester United.”

The arrival of Sesko casts fresh doubt over Rasmus Hojlund’s future. Transfer experts Fabrizio Romano reports that United are open to a loan offer worth around €6m plus full salary covered with an option to buy for the Danish striker with AC Milan currently in pole position.

However, the player’s approval for his departure is still pending, Leipzig have also explored the possibility of taking Hojlund on loan as part of the Sesko negotiations.

Sesko’s signing could also affect Newcastle’s stance on striker Alexander Isak, with the Magpies rejecting a £110m bid from Liverpool earlier this summer. Newcastle are only prepared to sell if a replacement is secured, but with Sesko now at United, their options may be limited.
