Nigeria has lost one of its foremost political figures as Chief Audu Innocent Ogbeh, a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, has died at the age of 78.

Chief Ogbeh, who was widely regarded for his intellect, humility, and principled leadership, died peacefully on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at the age of 78. His passing was confirmed by his family in an official statement released to the public.



In the heartfelt statement, the family described the late politician as a man of integrity and unwavering dedication to the service of his country and community.



“He departed this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of honour, service, and commitment to national development,” the statement read. “We are comforted by the countless lives he touched, the inspiration he provided, and the values he embodied throughout his life.”



While details of the burial arrangements are yet to be finalized, the family assured that information regarding the funeral schedule will be communicated in due course. They also expressed deep gratitude to friends, political allies, associates, and well-wishers for their words of comfort, prayers, and support during this painful period.

“We sincerely appreciate the outpouring of love and condolences from across the country and beyond. At this time of mourning, we respectfully request privacy to enable us to grieve the loss of our beloved patriarch,” the family appealed.




Chief Audu Ogbeh’s career spanned decades in politics, governance, and public policy. Born on July 28, 1947, in Otukpo, Benue State, he was not only a seasoned politician but also an accomplished farmer and educationist. He began his political journey in the Second Republic, serving as a legislator and later as Minister of Communications between 1982 and 1983.



His most prominent political role came in 2001 when he was elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a position he held until 2005. During his tenure, Ogbeh was known for his outspokenness, courage, and commitment to internal party democracy.



In 2015, under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, he was appointed Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, where he championed agricultural reforms aimed at boosting local food production, improving rural infrastructure, and reducing Nigeria’s dependence on food imports. His initiatives in rice production and rural farming support schemes earned him national recognition.


Beyond politics, Ogbeh was a passionate advocate for agricultural development and rural empowerment. He frequently spoke about Nigeria’s potential to achieve food security and economic growth through modernized farming practices. His personal farm served as a model for sustainable agriculture and practical demonstration for farmers.



Colleagues, political leaders, and citizens from all walks of life are expected to pay tribute to his enduring impact on Nigeria’s political and agricultural landscapes. His death marks the end of an era for many who saw him as a bridge between Nigeria’s older political traditions and modern governance ideals.
