Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says he is relishing the prospect of a selection headache after hailing Mason Mount’s “unbelievable” performance in Saturday’s pre-season victory over Fiorentina.

Mount, 26, started as a false nine in United’s final warm-up game before the new Premier League season, helping the Red Devils to a 5-4 penalty shootout win after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Simon Sohm’s early goal for the visitors was cancelled out by a Robin Gosens own goal midway through the first half.

Recall United endured their worst-ever league campaign last season, finishing 15th, but have strengthened significantly this summer with the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. Mount’s display against Fiorentina has now given Amorim further options in attack.

“It’s unbelievable the way he works, moving all the time from positions,” Amorim told MUTV. “That [a selection headache] is a good thing — it’s supposed to be like that, not like last season when we had to struggle to put 11 players on the pitch. The players need to fight during the week so they can change my mind.”

The Portuguese coach added that United will make full use of their final days on the training ground before the season begins, with two “really strong sessions” planned ahead of tactical preparations for the weekend.

United begin their 2025-26 campaign with a blockbuster home clash against Arsenal on Sunday August 17th.

Mount’s form has boosted his chances of starting, while fans will also be eager to see Sesko make his Old Trafford debut.
