Son Heung-min has officially joined Los Angeles FC, admitting the switch to Major League Soccer wasn’t his initial plan—but a heartfelt conversation with LAFC co-president John Thorrington convinced him otherwise.

The 33-year-old South Korean star, who captained Tottenham Hotspur to a Europa League title in May, joins LAFC for a record-breaking MLS transfer fee understood to be in excess of £20 million. He has signed a two-year contract with the option of an additional two years.

“If I’m honest, it was not my first choice,” Son admitted during his unveiling on Wednesday.

“But the first call I had with John after my season ended changed my heart and my brain. He showed me the destination where I should be. Now I’m here, and I’m more than happy—I’m so excited.”

The fee paid to Tottenham surpasses the previous MLS transfer record set in February when Atlanta United paid £16.5 million to sign Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough.

A New Chapter in Los Angeles

Son was in attendance at BMO Stadium on Tuesday night as LAFC edged past Tigres UANL 2-1 in the Leagues Cup, offering fans their first glimpse of the global superstar in black and gold.

“Los Angeles has such a rich history of champions, and I’m here to help write the next chapter,” Son said via an official club release.

“I’ve come to LA to lift trophies and give everything for this club, this city, and its fans.”

He will link up once again with former Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris, as LAFC aim to strengthen their push from sixth place in the Western Conference standings.

End of an Era at Spurs

Son’s departure marks the end of an extraordinary decade at Tottenham, where he scored 173 goals in 454 appearances after signing from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.

He made his final appearance for the club during a 1-1 preseason draw with Newcastle United in Seoul on Sunday—an emotional farewell in front of his home fans.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy paid tribute to the outgoing forward:

“Sonny is one of the greatest players to ever wear the famous Lilywhite shirt and he has been a joy to watch over the past decade.

Not only is he a wonderfully gifted footballer, but he’s also an incredible human being who has touched hearts and inspired people throughout the club and all over the world.

Sonny has given so much to this club, both on and off the pitch, and for that we are forever grateful.”

“We wish him all the best for the future, and he will always be welcome back at the club as a beloved and cherished member of our Spurs family.”

Looking Ahead

For LAFC, the acquisition of Son is not just a statement signing—it’s a transformational moment for MLS. For Son, it’s a fresh challenge in a new footballing landscape, but one where he’s already determined to leave his mark.
